It’s Winery Wednesday!
The third winery is…
Charles Krug
Peter Mondavi Family
Handsome and I happened upon the Charles Krug Winery. We were checking out The Culinary Institute student farm, which happens to be located on the property of the Charles Krug Winery. Once we were on the property, after we looked at the farm…we thought out loud, another wine tasting? uh, YES!
From the moment we walked into this historic, newly restored 1872 Redwood Cellar Tasting Room, we felt at home. The tasting room has been decorated with the perfect blend of reclaimed clear heart redwood which was originally used on the family’s wine tanks {there is a original Redwood Wine Tank on site, it is huge! See below.} and contemporary decor. Everyone at Charles Krug was so friendly and genuinely excited to share all the extraordinary in’s and out’s of this historic building and impressive wines.
There is even a trattoria located in the winery where you can grab a bite to eat or even have sweets paired with your Charles Krug wine. The trattoria, Cucina di Rosa, is named after the winery’s matriarch Rosa Mondavi. The Cucina carries items such as antipasti, panini, salads, and of course sweets. They also serve a delicious Equator espresso.
While I was taking to a very sweet woman who was showing me around the building and what was soon to be on the property outside {an outdoor seating area to enjoy the wine}, Handsome was speaking to Michael, a resident certified Sommelier about getting a private barrel tasting for us. That is something I have always wanted to do. Michael brought us behind the glass wall and explained to us in detail the two wines we would be tasting. I am by no means a wine expert, but the newly pressed barrel wines we tasted were delicious! If they were for sale now, I would have bought a couple of bottles. Sadly, these wines won’t be ready for quite some time, but when they are, we will be the first in line!
It was a incredible experience. See what you can do if you just ask!
Look at the legs on that wine!
This year on November 8 {the same day as mine}, Rosa son, Peter will celebrate his birthday, his 100th birthday! Happy Birthday, Mr. Mondavi!
We were so lucky to stumble upon Charles Krug. It is a winery I will go back to every time I visit the Napa Valley!

I love trips to Napa and intimate tours of wineries. I’ve been there 3 times and I never tire of it. I’m ready to go back! This looks so interesting and I’m glad you had a wonderful and fascinating tour.
Cathy, Thank you!
It’s killing me that I’m going to miss harvest this year because we’ll be in Sicily (doing in there). Thanks for the reminder of how much fun our wineries are!
Oh… Sicily’s harvest!
Kudos to your husband for asking! What a special experience. The wine looks delicious (and is making me want a glass at 8 in the morning!), but the architecture of these places you’ve been sharing just floors me! So lovely, so inviting. I think I shall now officially live vicariously through you. I look forward to the next winery!
See you at the next winery on Wednesday, Lisa.
Great article! So fun learning something new about one of my favorite wine makers. I’ve even visited the Mondavi vinyards years agol
Peter Mondavi was there while we were at the winery, he does not look like he is about to be 100, he still drives. I think it the great italian genes and good wine! It was a very special experience!
Oh, you make me want to switch out my coffee for a glass of wine, but it’s only 7:30 am!
Go ahead, Kim. I’ll never tell!
Thanks to you my Napa to-see list is filling up with great places and rich stories! Love your reviews!
Thank you, Ruth!
I have been to Napa as well — loved it! Now I wish I had a nice glass of wine to drink as I read your post and admire the photos!
Thanks, Helene!
I crack up every time I see Winery Wednesday! And then I look at your gorgeous picture and wish I were there!
Glad you like Winery Wednesday!
WOW! Love the pictures and the story make me want to pop a cork! Living not too far, we spend a lot of time in Paso Robles, Los Olivos and even Napa. But I do love Winery Wednesdays!! Thanks for sharing.
I will have a couple from Paseo Robles, soon.
I’m putting this one on my “Must Visit” list!
The building alone is so beautiful and the wine…
I am sitting in a Panera bread with my ice tea really wanting a glass of read wine now:)
Your photos are beautiful!
I cannot wait to visit wine country for the first time.
Doreen, You will love it! It is such a beautiful part of California!
So fascinating! Looks like a beautiful place to visit.
It is, Wendy!
Wow! Look at the size of that tank. Your story made my mouth water.
Thanks, Toni!
That winery looks beautiful, I love the building, the wine tasting looks yummy too.
Oh, it was!
