It’s Winery Wednesday!
Today, we are back in Temecula Valley wine country to visit…
Callaway Vineyard and Winery
With all the wineries Handsome and I have visited lately, up and down the California Coast, Callaway was the first winery we have seen with these self-serve wine dispensers. We were told by employees that sometimes it get very busy when buses of wine tours come to visit, so they made the decision to put in these self serve machines to elevate the wait. When you walk in, you buy a token and when you want a tasting you just put your token in the machine with the wine you would like to try.
They also have a wine tasting bar with an outstanding view of the valley. Their Bordeaux blend was one of my favorites Reds on this trip through Temecula’s wineries.
Their wine tasting staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the wines and the Callaway legacy. Did you know in 1969 the first of Callaway’s vines were planted in Temecula? And, Callaway Winery and the famous golf club “Big Bertha” by Callaway, the number one golf company in the world were both the brain child of Ely Callaway.
Right beyond the tasting area was this glass enclosed dining room. The view from this room was spectacular. I would love to have an occasion to have a dinner party here. The picture does not do this room justice!
At the entrance of the winery there is a gift shop (like most wineries). This gift shop had unique items many of which I wanted to purchase!
There are many places to sit outside and enjoy the panoramic view but, my favorite place on the property was a tucked away patio area covered by my favorite vine, the Passiflora also know as the Passion Vine. It received it’s name due to the numbers of it’s various flower parts, Spanish missionaries adopted this unique flower as a symbol of the last days of Jesus, especially his crucifixion (you didn’t know you were going to get a history lesson today, did you?). For more info about this beautiful flower click here.

That is unbelievable. Self-serve. Um, how well does that do? Hmm.
Love you posts about the vineyards you visit. Always fascinating.
Thank you, Cathy.
How I know it’s Wed. Looks like a cool place!
It is, Carol.
Temecula isn’t that far from me. Will have to go for a visit!
It make a great day trip!
Oh, that looks fabulous. That view is to die for. Sipping wine and gazing at a gorgeous view — that’s all it takes to make me a happy camper.
I feel the same, Helene!
Hey a winery I have actually visited! We are not far from Temecula, the area has really come a long way and some of the wineries have great charm. I think the self-serve dispensers are a marvelous idea!
I do like the self-serve dispensers when there is a crowd, but I love the info most behind the tasting bar staff usually offers!
What a great looking place!
It was fun to photograph.
Hmm. I understand the efficiency factor of machines, but the pouring and personal contact are part of what I like about tastings!
I’m with you, Ruth! And, the staff probably pours a bit more than the machine!
I hope you never run out of wineries because I thoroughly enjoy visiting them with you. Well, vicariously, of course. Cheers!
Thanks, Lisa. It has been great fun touring all of these wineries up and down the California Coast.
Love those dark bottles. Here in Davis we have a bar that is all DIY wine tasting. You buy a card, then serve your own pours. It’s actually pretty fun.
You must give me the name so when I visit I can stop by for a glass or two!
What a beautiful winery and I love the countryside around there. So happy to have the information on the beautiful little flower. My favorite thing!
Thanks, Wendy!
This has been such a long week for me, I am so ready for that wine! And what a beautiful setting.
Linda, hope you get that glass soon!
I love visiting Temecula wine country, we’re wine club members at Falkner and my parents live up there too so we always have a place to stay! 🙂
Lucky you, Jennifer. I will have to visit Falkner on my next trip there. Thanks for the tip!
Wow. I love the idea of a self-service winery. Does that lessen the chicness of a wine I wonder, though? Looks like you had a fantastic day.
Estelle, It was a fantastic day! I do prefer the human contact of my wine being poured.
My cousin got married here a couple of years ago. It was beautiful and we enjoyed the wine. In our last home, we had flowers like that in our yard, but they were purple and white. They were absolutely stunning!
Christine, I bet the wedding was beautiful! I love the purple and white passion flowers!
